چکیده

Physically unclonable functions (PUFs) have been touted for their inherent resistance to invasive attacks and low cost in providing a hardware root of trust for various security applications. SRAM PUFs in particular are popular in industry for key/ID generation. Due to intrinsic process variations, SRAM cells, ideally, tend to have the same start-up behavior. SRAM PUFs exploit this start-up behavior. Unfortunately, not all SRAM cells exhibit reliable start-up behavior due to noise susceptibility. Hence, design enhancements are needed for improving reliability. Some of the proposed enhancements in literature include fuzzy extraction, error-correcting codes and voting mechanisms. All enhancements involve a trade-off between area/power/performance overhead and PUF reliability. This paper presents a design enhancement technique for reliability that improves upon previous solutions. We present simulation results to quantify improvement in SRAM PUF reliability and efficiency. The proposed technique is shown to generate a 128-bit key in ≤0.2 μs at an area estimate of 4538 μm2 with error rate as low as 10−6 for intrinsic error probability of 15%.

A highly reliable butterfly PUF in SRAM-based FPGAs

This paper presents a butterfly physically unclonable function (PUF) implementation in SRAM-based field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). To avoid output instability, we propose a delay difference test to identify reliable slices (mapped to which butterfly PUF cells are highly reliable) and then PUF reliability is significantly improved by selective mapping PUF cells to reliable slices, which i...

TV-PUF : A Fast Lightweight Analog Physically Unclonable Function

Physical Unclonable Function (PUF) is hardware analog of a one-way function which can address hardware security issues such as device authentication, generating secret keys, producing seeds for Random Number Generators, etc. Traditional silicon PUFs are based on delay (Ring Oscillator PUFs and Arbiter PUFs) or memory structures (like SRAM). In this paper, we propose a novel idea of a very fast,...

Using Power-Up SRAM State of Atmel ATmega1284P Microcontrollers as Physical Unclonable Function for Key Generation and Chip Identification

Secret keys are usually stored in an nonvolatile memory, which can be hard to secure. An alternative is to generate the keys “on-the-fly” by using the inherent uniqueness of a device based on the manufacturing process variations. This is realized by physical unclonable functions (PUFs). A promising approach is to construct an intrinsic PUF based on SRAM memory, since many electronic devices hav...

Sizing of SRAM Cell with Voltage Biasing Techniques for Reliability Enhancement of Memory and PUF Functions

Abstract: Static Random Access Memory (SRAM) has recently been developed into a physical unclonable function (PUF) for generating chip-unique signatures for hardware cryptography. The most compelling issue in designing a good SRAM-based PUF (SPUF) is that while maximizing the mismatches between the transistors in the cross-coupled inverters improves the quality of the SPUF, this ironically also...

Comparison of SRAM and FF PUF in 65nm Technology

Hardware security is an essential tool in the prevention of cloning, theft of service and tampering. This security is often based on cryptographic primitives, which use a key that is securely stored somewhere in the hardware. The strength of the security is therefore dependent upon the effort required from an attacker to compromise this key. Since the tools used to carry out attacks on hardware...
